The make-believe teacher. It is said you learn something new every day. I suspect that’s just because we forget 3 or 4 or more things every day and maybe re-discover some of them, hopefully. Second graders ( 7, to 8 yr olds) are made of bees, worms, and ants or basically all wiggly things. True perpetual motion. Because they are true perpetual motion the ole saw about wearing them down is like trying to ‘dry water’, the more you work at wearing them down the more it fires them up and burns you out. Though they aren’t human yet they are getting there. Some of us, I think, are just fake 7 yr olds. They just do it, we just want to. So we start school with the Extras subjects, Art , Engineering, Drama and Connections ( yeh I know) then Humanities, then Math then Literacy or PE then Jiu-Jitsu or Mandarin ( after all we will soon be working for them) then reading one of her favorite books for 20 minutes. Like “The adventures of Captin Underpants”. Kind of a Buggs Bunny sort of thing with multi-level humor (sometimes I read ahead to see what happens). By this time it is 1pm or 2mp or 3pm or 4pm depending on the emotional state of the 2nd grader & my teaching skill and endurance. And then! And then! I am a free man! Well sort of. Ok, just a far less focused man. School is out and until the parents are done working from home I just monitor the sounds for breaking home furnishings, bones, and major body parts or excessive suffering of the long-suffering dogs. Sometimes we go for walks. Amazing the number of people out walking. I am sure it saves many lives. Life is good though at times different than normal, at least normal as normally seen.
